Water Footprinting of Wastewater Pipelines
A comparison between concrete and plastic pipes shows that the water footprint of a concrete sewer pipe is between 2.6 to 6.7 times lower than an equivalent size plastic pipe

Carbonation (Part 2) Comparing the Carbon Footprints of Concrete & Plastic Pipes

Concrete pipes compare favourably to polypropylene and HDPE pipes when installed with a full granular surround and the effective carbon footprint of a DN2100 concrete pipe including carbonation can be around 38% lower than a DN2100 HDPE pipe. The gap is significantly bigger when other bedding designs are used.

The Carbonation of Concrete Pipeline Products
CPSA has published a new Information Sheet which looks at how carbonation can have a positive impact on the carbon footprint of concrete pipeline products. The Information Sheet, entitled "Carbonation (Part 1) How it Reduces the Carbon Footprint of Concrete", shows that the amount of CO2 absorbed can effectively reduce the cradle-to-gate carbon footprint of a concrete pipes by almost 10%. The carbon emissions of concrete pipes can therefore look markedly different if such factors are included in the carbon auditing process. |

New CPSA Offloading Guide ensures safe deliveries
The Concrete Pipeline Systems Association (CPSA) has published a new document to help customers ensure the safe offloading of concrete pipeline product deliveries.
Falls from vehicles and delivery accidents make up a large proportion of workplace injuries and the Guide offers advice on the risks associated with delivery and transport operations. The scope of responsibilities before, during and after products have been delivered are demonstrated and the Guide complements other industry reference documents including HSE Information Sheet WPT06 ‘Delivering safely: Co-operating to prevent workplace vehicle accidents’ and the Freight Transport Association Guide ‘Preventing Falls from Vehicles’. A PDF copy of the Guide is found here

Learn about Carbon Footprinting and gain CPD hours, for free!
The CPSA training programme for industry professionals has been extended with the launch of a new CPD accredited presentation “Embodied Carbon Emissions in Concrete and Other Pipeline Materials”.
Everyone today is talking about sustainability. The UK’s pledge to reduce carbon emissions by 80% by 2050 will place immense pressure on industry to deliver. Carbon reduction and efficiency targets are appearing in all sectors. However confusion is widespread and "Carbon Accounting" can still be considered in its infancy. The new CPD presentation:
- Explains the fundamentals of carbon accounting and the data required to produce a carbon footprint
- Identifies recognized information sources and indicates limitations to the reliability of some data
- Includes a detailed analysis of pipelines and provides comparisons with alternative pipeline materials and installation methods
- Provides an overview of other environmental impacts such as responsible sourcing, recycling and embodied energy

PRESS RELEASE: Outcry at false carbon footprint claims for manholes
The Concrete Pipeline Systems Association (CPSA) is aware of a carbon footprint comparison study between UK traditional manhole systems and a new manhole system imported from abroad. Dutch manufacturers, Kiljstra, have referred to the study findings in a number of adverts and made several claims based on that comparison. CPSA believes that the results of the study were significantly affected by incorrect information and assumptions. Download CPSA Press Release here.
A number of discrepancies were identified – these are detailed here

Alarm over non-compliant manhole import
A Press Release was published by CPSA on a new non-compliant manhole type in the market. The new manhole type does not meet requirements at BS 5911-3, EN 752, CESWI (6th Ed), and Sewers for Adoption (6th Ed). It is understood that these manhole systems are orginially produced in the Netherlands and imported to the UK.
CPSA also released an explanatory note with more details on the compliance problems of that manhole system
