sustainability

Sustainable Construction has become a top priority issue for the drainage and sewerage construction sector today. With the new OFWAT PR09 methodology, placing more weight on water companies to evaluate the environmental and social impacts of their businesses, an increasing demand has emerged in both the water and wastewater sectors to understand how sustainability can be implemented throughout the industry.

Concrete pipeline manufacturers realised the scale of the challenge at a very early stage and has been successful in addressing a number of means to tackle different sustainability measures and implement different product/process based solutions.

Life Cycle Assessment Research

In 1999 independent leading Dutch consultancy INTRON was commissioned to carry out a cradle-to-grave comparative environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study for seven types of sewer pipeline systems in the UK. These included concrete, clay, solid wall PVC, twin wall PVC, ultrarib, twin wall Polypropylene, and spirally wound HDPE. This study is currently being updated.

Concrete Pipeline Systems: Your Sustainable Option

Concrete pipeline systems offer the ultimate solution for a number of sustainable development challenges. The benefits of concrete pipeline products range from low carbon footprint to reduced sourcing impacts, to long durability and service life, and efficient flood mitigation solutions.

This brochure lists12 different sustainability advantages of using concrete drainage products and illustrates why concrete pipes can help the UK cope with the challenges of the 21st Century.
